In The Beginning.
A Handful of Quarter Horse racing enthusiasts got together to discuss their ideas about making the return of sprint horse racing-a reality. The 15 members who attended that meeting at the Bachus Marsh on Saturday 29th April 2000 decided to keep the name of VRQHA and an election of committee members was held.
John Honeyman was elected President, OJ Morgan Vice President & Secretary with Greg Hamish elected treasurer. Committee members were Bob Fallow, Carolyn Robertson and Bill Robinson.
The VRQHA had a demonstration race at Great Western on Melbourne Cup day in November 2000, This race consisted of the well known sprint horses at the time in Sir Wemberly, Baron Falls, Model Jet and Jacks Thunder. The visitors that day included the minister for racing in Victoria Robert Hulls.
Progress was slow but steady and, in 2001 as the Sprint Industry was still a vision of the future, Chiltern track was host for the first official Quarter Horse racing on the 22nd of September 2001. Hundreds of racing fans showed up on Saturday for an afternoon of exciting Quarter Horse racing.
Sprint Racing and Breeding in Australia has had a turbulent career at best and it continues a balancing act to stay afloat, its past has promised much but continues to deliver little to the loyal followers of this great sport.
In the process of putting our history together for the VRQHA website we will endeavor to bring you as much information as we can find from the old and new participants of sprint racing in Australia from its humble beginnings.
We begin with Stallions who not only started our Industry but continue to be found in the bloodlines of our modern day sprinters.
